How Software Vendors are Responding to Cloud-first Strategies

Crystal Bedell

There are benefits companies can get in the cloud that they can’t get with on-premises software. These benefits are driving more companies to adopt a cloud-first strategy and, in turn, software vendors are following suit.

Nearly 50% of companies surveyed for North Bridge’s sixth annual Future of Cloud Computing Survey have a cloud-first or cloud-only strategy. By going cloud-first, companies are looking to benefit from scalability, business agility and cost. But that’s not all.

According to North Bridge, “A new finding this year is the fact that a surprisingly high number, 42%, of companies surveyed derive 50% or more of their business through cloud-based applications. In fact, a whopping 79.9% of the companies surveyed were getting some revenue from the cloud. This speaks to the digital transformation occurring across many industries and how many are looking to not only move more quickly with the cloud but profit from it as well.”

“Cloud-first strategies are the foundation for staying relevant in a fast-paced world,” said Ed Anderson, research vice president at Gartner. “The market for cloud services has grown to such an extent that it is now a notable percentage of total IT spending…”

In fact, IDC predicts that overall cloud spending will grow at nearly seven times the rate of overall IT spending growth from 2015 to 2020.

Software vendors are not only taking notice, they’re augmenting or replacing their approach to software design and planning. By 2019 Gartner predicts that more than 30% of the 100 largest vendors’ new software investments will have shifted from cloud-first to cloud-only.

That bears repeating: Software vendors are moving from cloud-first to cloud-only.

Which means if you haven’t started moving your software to the cloud, you’re falling further and further behind by the day. The problem is getting the people and skillsets you need to transition to a cloud-first or cloud-only business model. Moving an existing application to the cloud, and building and releasing software products to the cloud require different skillsets than those most companies currently have on staff. Acquiring the necessary training, choosing the right technology stack, undergoing a proof of concept—all of that takes valuable time.

At RightBrain Networks, we understand your need to move to the cloud quickly and to take ownership of the deployment.
